QEMU on Windows

QEMU is an emulator for various CPUs. It works on Linux, Windows, FreeBSD and Mac OS X. Windows version is in an alpha stage. I hope I can provide useful information on development and usage of the software.

What's New?

• May 20, 2013: created pre-release of Qemu-1.4.1 (see Changelog): actually not ready for real distribution:
  • Removed the test images from the zip file: it's too big, if needed you'll have to fetch them in the Qemu Testing area. Start up .bat files are available in the release directory;
  • i386-test.bat: still slow booting
  • i386-VNC-test.bat: works usual speed (with TightVNC, forget VNC-Viewer) => SDL support is broken ?
  • arm-test.bat: '(Not Responding)' Works when using VNC
  • sparc-test.bat: works correctly
  • mipsel-test*.bat: doesn't work, even with VNC
  • ppc-test.bat: starts in Qemu console mode
• May 27, 2013: created Qemu-1.4.2 (see Changelog). Switched to ZLIB 1.2.7-1 and corrected some errors in my development environment as I changed the PC used for compiling (now Windows7) and MinGW is now installed in C:
  Status below is based on tests done on this Windows7 machine with the new bat files available in the release directory: 
  • i386-test.bat: Still (very) slow booting; tried -std vga, -std cirrus and -sdl => no changes.
  • i386-VNC-test.bat: Works fast with tightVnc (Remember to use 127.0.0.1::5900 for the Host in TightVNCViewer); Tried SET QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=fmod and QEMU_FMOD_DRV=dsound => no audio output (?).
  • arm-test.bat: '(Not Responding)'; but works when using VNC.
  • sparc-test.bat: works correctly but keyboard is not active (maybe a problem with my antivirus); works with VNC.
  • mipsel-test*.bat: doesn't work, even with VNC.
  • ppc-test.bat: blocked in Qemu console mode and keyboard is not active (maybe a problem with my antivirus again); stdout says: Unable to get size of device tree file 'ppc.dtb'
• June 18, 2013: created Qemu-1.5.0 (see Changelog)
  Status as for previous version is: 
  • i386-test.bat: works finally correctly !
  • arm-test.bat: blocked and 'not responding' with SDL only, works with VNC.
  • sparc-test.bat: works correctly (security software was blocking the keyboard)
  • mipsel-test*.bat: nothing is displayed (even with VNC) but no 'not responding'
  • ppc-test.bat: starts in Qemu console mode and I dunno how to continue (command line probably wrong)
• July 2, 2013: created Qemu-1.5.1 (see Changelog)
  Status as for previous version is: 
  • i386-test.bat: works.
  • arm-test.bat: works with VNC.
  • sparc-test.bat: works.
  • mipsel-test*.bat: doesn't work
  • ppc-test.bat: starts in Qemu console mode and blocked.
• August 8, 2013: created Qemu-1.5.2 (see Changelog)
  Status is the same as for previous version.

Latest Windows binaries (includes FMOD support and SDL 1.2.15): 

• no suffix packages means that the following is included:
  qemu-system-armw.exe, qemu-system-i386w.exe, qemu-system-ppcw.exe, qemu-system-sparcw.exe, qemu-system-x86_64w.exe, qemu-system-mipselw.exe.
• -Lite packages means that only the i386 virtual machine is compiled and available.
• -Medium contains also ARM, PPC and usually SPARC virtual machines.

How to build

Since Qemu-1.0 the build is done with the MinGW compiler (as it doesn't compile any more with cygwin, even if Cygwin is still used for the shell and other tools: MSYS is not required)
The main difference is now that the build is done since Qemu-1.2.1 with MinGW by using the latest version of gcc.
You need the following packages (downloadable with the MinGW installer program) :

Warning: do not forget to correct the values of prefix= in the provided lib/pkgconfig/*.pc files!

ZLIB for MinGW: 
You need the following packages

Note: everything is installed for me in C:\MinGW. Those tar files can be extracted with the -lzma option of cygwin's tar if needed, as the cygwin's shell is still used by me (and not the MSYS version).

DirectX:

PIXMAN for MinGW:

libfdt for MinGW :

Qemu: 

• Fetch the source code:  http://wiki.qemu.org/download/qemu-1.5.2.tar.bz2 (or here: qemu-1.5.2.tar.bz2)
• Optionally fetch the fmod library:  http://www.fmod.org/index.php/release/version/fmodapi375win.zip (or here: fmodapi375win.zip)
• Fetch and install the patches:  qemu-1.5.1-patch and qemu.ico.
  This patch is based on the original patches found here:  http://www.h7.dion.ne.jp/~qemu-win/download/qemu-0.9.0-patches.zip plus my additional work (.ico file + modified version.rc).
• Prepare the Cygwin/MinGW environment: 
  Created some links in $HOME/bin directory to ease the calls to the MinGW tools:

• Verify the generated config-host.mak and config-target.mak because some spurious ^M might be in! (you can use this script to ease your pain: clean-config.sh).
