Tips and tricks

Some various things discovered:

• Always mount your Windows drive with the binmode option. I had problem displaying JPEG and PNG images located on a Windows drive with GQview when using the default mount option.
• Create a root user and a local user for xscreensaver.
• You can have a fonctional machine on a network with the following configuration files:
  • inetd.conf,
  • launch /usr/sbin/inetd,
  • you can now use rlogin or ftp to your cygwin based machine !
  • look at the following screenshots:
    • rlogin from a SunOS machine;
    • Corresponding call to ps on the Cygwin machine.
    • ftp from a SunOS machine;
    • Corresponding call to ps on the Cygwin machine.

Scripts and config files

These files reflects my personal cygwin installation:

• .bashrc;
• .inputrc with french keyboard management;
• .xmodmaprc again for a french keyboard;
• startxwin.sh my version of the script to start X11: uses XFCE and enables french keyboard;
• /usr/bin/ldd.sh this is a script having the behavior of the famous ldd UNIX command;
• rxvt.bat simply use this bat file to replace the default cygwin bat file;

xfce 3.8.11 sound+backdrop binaries

This is a part of a try to port XFce 3.8.11 on Cygwin. I didn't manage to have everything fonctional but you can install the 2 compiled modules in a xfce-3.4.4-cygwin install. This version comes from the contrib directory of xfree/cygwin. Get it from here. You will have with my mini-contrib: jpeg enhanced /usr/X11R6/bin/xfbd.exe and sound enhanced /usr/X11R6/bin/xfsound.exe. Download the binaries for Cygwin/XFree86 (128 Kb).
